Dear Students, Applicants and Valued Visitors,
On behalf of the
Department of Biology at Balıkesir University, I am delighted to share our
scientific expertise and academic vision with you. I aim to summarise our
department's educational philosophy, research approach and strategic
objectives.
Biology is one of the
fundamental sciences that seeks to understand and explain life in all its
aspects. It encompasses a broad perspective, ranging from cellular mechanisms
to molecular processes, and from genetic structure to ecosystem dynamics.
Today, biology plays a decisive role in many areas such as health,
agriculture, the environment, food safety, biotechnology, and sustainable
development. With this awareness, our department aims not only to provide
students with theoretical knowledge but also to equip them with scientific
thinking skills and the ability to apply knowledge.
Our education program is
regularly updated in line with contemporary requirements and scientific
developments. Our course content is structured to cover fundamental biology
disciplines, primarily focusing on our main fields of study: Botany, General
Biology, Hydrobiology, Molecular Biology, and Zoology. Our applied
education approach, supported by laboratory and fieldwork, allows our students
to reinforce their theoretical knowledge in experimental and field settings. In
addition, our students actively participate in the scientific production
process, particularly through projects developed under the TÜBİTAK 2209
programs, and gain academic competencies such as project writing and data
analysis.
Educational processes in
our department are conducted within a student-centered approach. Our goal is to
nurture our students not only as knowledge seekers but also as individuals with
developed research skills, who are inquisitive, capable of critical thinking,
and committed to ethical values. Through the academic advising system, our
students' development is regularly monitored, and they are guided in their
career planning. Furthermore, participation in scientific activities is
encouraged through seminars, workshops, and conferences, enabling students to
interact with diverse perspectives.
Our academic staff
consists of highly qualified faculty members with expertise in various fields
and a high level of scientific productivity. Research conducted at the national
and international levels is supported by TÜBİTAK grants and our university's Scientific
Research Projects unit, and is further strengthened through collaborations with
the public and private sectors.
International agreements
hold an important place among our department's strategic goals. In this regard,
international exchange and collaboration opportunities are offered to our
students and academic staff. Specifically, under the Erasmus program, our students
have the opportunity to study at various higher education institutions in
Europe, while our academic staff can engage in teaching and research mobility.
These experiences contribute to our goal of cultivating individuals who can
communicate scientifically on a global scale, are open to different cultures,
and are versatile.
Our department adopts a
conscious and sensitive approach to sustainability and environmental
responsibility. In the face of global issues such as climate change, declining
biodiversity, and the sustainable use of natural resources, the guidance of
biological science is needed more than ever. In line with this, our research
and educational activities are conducted with an environmentally focused
perspective; the goal is to nurture our students to become individuals who are
sensitive to nature and capable of developing scientifically based solutions.
Academic activities and awareness initiatives carried out within this scope aim
to address environmental issues on a scientific basis and strengthen students'
awareness of sustainability.
Our graduates work in
public institutions, research centres, environmental consultancy firms, the
health and agriculture sectors, educational institutions and the academic
world. Our postgraduate education programmes support our
students' scientific specialisation, training qualified researchers at master's
and doctoral levels. The achievements of our graduates are among the
important indicators of our department's educational quality.
Our institutional
identity is based on the principles of scientific rigour, commitment to ethical
values, participation, transparency, and continuous improvement. We regularly
evaluate and develop our teaching and learning activities by prioritising quality
assurance processes. The views of our students and other stakeholders guide the
development of our department.
Dear students and
prospective students, As the Department of Biology, we invite you to become
part of an academic community that advances under the light of science,
embraces a culture of research, and is innovative and productive. Our aim is
not only to equip you with professional knowledge but also to nurture you into
conscious individuals who contribute to society and humanity. Our department
offers an educational environment where students can develop their scientific
curiosity, discover their potential, and prepare for the future with
confidence; it aims to preserve this principle and understanding in the future.

where you can find details about our academic staff and research areas.
We would like to thank
all our stakeholders who contribute to our department and wish for the new
academic year to be successful in line with our goals.
Yours sincerely,
Head of the Biology Department
